Interactive Discovery Wall

Type: Client Project

Skills: Research, Wireframe Development, Prototyping

The Challenge

Our client built a learning center in their headquarters lobby to host hands on educational programs. A large digital screen, called the Discovery Wall, was installed in the entrance of the space to introduce visitors to the brand and establish an interactive learning atmosphere. When they came to us, the content on the Discovery Wall was not engaging users and it was sitting untouched.

The Solution

Based on learnings from user research as well as a series of site visits, we reimagined the Discovery Wall experience. We designed an accessible digital experience that encouraged people to interact, told a cohesive story, and is designed to adapt as the learning center grows.

The Process

Discovery

First, we analyzed the existing content, observed visitors, interviewed stakeholders, and audited related large screen experiences. We also partnered with the developers to understand the technical limitations of the wall. From these learnings, we develop experience principles which served as a strategic guide to build the experience around:

Invite Participation: We want anyone entering the space to be attracted to this experience and know they can interact with the Discovery Wall.

Accommodate All Visitors: We must consider the height and width of the screen to make content reachable, considering all heights and accessibility regulations.

Keep it Simple and Compelling: We will consolidate content into a visual story that allows the user to learn more without leaving the experience.

Time is Precious and it Varies: The narrative we tell needs to capture attention, be immediately understood, and informative.

Definition

The new experience needed to be accessible. This meant the content had to be reachable for all users and needed to capture their attention without being confusing. One of the first decisions we made was to divide the screen into three panels, allowing multiple users to engage and keeping their focus on a smaller area. We then thought about the vertical space, dividing the screen into zones which helped us to plan content.

Design

In the end, we developed an experience that was welcoming, intuitive, and told a compelling brand story.
