The Problem
After completing a redesign for their global corporate website, our client asked us to develop a playbook to guide 100+ site owners to update the company’s 50+ local corporate websites. Our goal was to create guidance to help site owners update their local websites to match the global design system and create a streamlined and consistent digital experience across the company.
The Solution
We developed three website options to accommodate the varying needs of each location and built flexible page templates for each option. These templates gave site owners autonomy while still maintaining consistency across all 50+ websites. We also developed an interactive playbook experience for the site owners which grounded them in the corporate site strategy, helped them determine which website option was best for their local needs, and outlined how to use each page template.
Summary of the process
Discover
At the beginning, we audited analogous experiences and conAt the beginning of the project, we formed a Task Force which was made up of ~20 client site owners from various locations. We had bi-weekly meetings with the Task Force throughout the project to collect insights and validate decisions. In our initial meetings, we surveyed the Task Force to learn about their priorities, challenges, and goals. We also conducted a current state and competitive audit. Our findings lead to key imperatives and decisions that drove our approach.
Define
Using our findings, we defined local website strategy make of three website option that build in complexity. We validated the approach with the Task force and built a flexible information architecture for each option based on content audits from 10 sample countries.
Design - Templates
Based on our recommended IA, we built flexible page templates for each website option and validated them with the Task Force. They were modular, reusable templates that leveraged global components where possible.
Design - Playbook
Finally, we designed and built an interactive playbook to guide site owners when building and launching their new local site. The playbook communicated the guiding strategy for the future of local websites, helped site owners select an option, and provided direction on how to leverage each page template.
